Update: The winning TV models earning “King of TV” status for 2021 included: “King of 4K TV” (Sony A90J OLED TV); “King of 8K TV,” (LG ZX Signature Series 8K OLED TV) and the “King of Ultra Short Throw Projectors” (Hisense L9G Series UST Laser DLP Projector).
Scarsdale, N.Y.-based A/V specialty electronics retailer Value Electronics’ is conducting its 17th annual 2021 “King of TV Shootout” Evaluation event this Sunday and Monday (Sept. 12 & 13) from 9 am to 5 pm ET staged exclusively in front of a group of invited expert judges.
Unlike previous Shootouts, this year’s event will be staged in a New York City location that will not be open to the public as a precaution against the escalating pandemic situation. The participating judges will include a group of professional post-production video experts, video scientists and professional product reviewers. (Full disclosure: HD Guru has opted not to participate in the judging this year as a precaution).
The good news is the process will be live streamed — see the link here — both days and will offer insight and education into what the experts will be looking for in determining top-level picture quality based on content type and room lighting conditions.

The events’ masters of ceremonies include Stacey Spears (a developer of the industry standard Spears & Munsil Test Pattern Discs) for the flat-panel TV Shootout and Rob Sabin, editor-in-chief of Projector Central, for the UST projector portion of the program.
Among some of the newer display technologies under review in side-by-side comparisons will be MiniLED, Dual Cell LCD, brighter and larger OLED TVs and for the first time 8K OLED and LCD TV models.
Day one of the Shootout will focus on premium 4K UHD and 8K UHD flat-panel TVs. These will provide a cross section of some of the latest and greatest new flagship model technologies. The selected 4K and 8K flat-panel displays, which are taken randomly out of the store’s inventory and calibrated by ISF-certified expert technicians, will be judged separately.
Day two, which begins at 10 a.m. EST, will focus for the first time on front projectors — specifically premium caliber flagship ultra short-throw projectors that offer an option for viewers wanting very large screen images for high-end home theaters.
“The 2021 flagship 4K and 8K TVs and UST projectors will be competing, with a detailed comparison of all the attributes of picture quality”, said Robert Zohn, proprietor of Value Electronics and originator of the “King of TV Shootout.” “The winners will be crowned “King of 4K TV,” “King of 8K TV,” and “King of UST.”
