I asked the same thing about comparable models. They just said "these are your only choices". With that in mind, I chose the 55HX701 with Bravia 3 and 240hz. This is one of their better CCFL sets. I asked about getting a 55EX700 (edge lit LED) but I was shot down.

What kind of bulb costs $400? I thought they were a little over $100.

KDL55HX701 $550.00 *+ local sales tax
KDL55EX501 $350.00 + local sales tax
KDL46VE5 NO CHARGE

I just called today... not too happy about all of this... I just bought a lamp thinking that it would fix the problem. $400 down the drain... Why can't they offer a comparable model? XBR series?? Or is the 701 comparable? PS: is it just me who was pissed that it was not a true 1080p television. It was the ONLY reason I bought it at the time!!

By the way, I originally took the 55EX500 but changed to the 55HX701, when the new offers came out. I had sent my serial tag in already, but they had not charged my credit card yet. I called them and asked them if I could change to the HX701 and after putting me on hold for 5 min. the rep came back on and said that they could do it. This model is only on the Sony Canada website. It supposed to be released at the end of the month.

Jeff,

1. I don't believe you need to be under warranty. In your case, I would call Sony and tell them that your tv screen is green. They will not offer to fix it since it's not under warranty. Explain to them, your a longtime loyal Sony customer blah, blah, blah. They will offer you the following right now.

KDL-46VE5 free

KDL-55EX501 $350 (this is same as a EX500 except you get a 3 year warranty)

KDL-55HX701 $550 (not much
info on this. It's only being sold in Canada right now. Check it out at Sony Style Canada.

2. Yes

3. 55HX701 - best value - you get $2600 tv for $550. With the 55EX500 you get a $1750 tv for $350. Do the math. Plus HX 701 has Bravia 3 and 240hz vs Bravia 2, 120hz for the 55EX500. The 46VE5 is last years ECO series model. It's Bravia 2 and 120hz. The only possible minus would be glare for the HX701. It has some sort of glass of plastic overlay on the screen. If your using in a bright room, it might be something to consider.

4. Who knows. Mine has had the same light yellow tint for about 2 months. I put the tv on the High Altitude setting, so the fan will run faster.(better cooling?) Not sure if it will help, but it can't hurt.

5. They will probably ask for your serial number. It is located on the back of the set.

Good luck

Hi all....thanks so much for the incredible web site as well as all of your comments. I did have a question, however. I purchased a KDS-R60XBR1 in April of 2006 with a build date of September 2005. Like everyone, I personally just started witnessing the 'dreaded' green creeping in to the picture on the right side of the screen. It is like everyone on the right side is 'hulk-ish' and everyone on the left side appears semi-normal. Of course I have spent lots of time trying to even this out (as well as replacing with a new bulb thinking that was the problem) but it is obviously the start to an OB issue. Would that be the correct assessment? Now, I am no longer under warranty (of course) but...
1. Do I need to be under warranty in order for Sony to replace the OB if I call the listed number to complain and mention the class action suit? Or am I out of luck. AND do I even want it replaced?
2. Does anyone think with all of the issues on the OB that Sony might just offer me a replacement just to get rid of me? (not that I would necessarily complain)
3. If offer is given, what is the preferred T.V to get?
4. From the onset of the green hulk picture, how long can I expect my picture to still function semi-properly. (I am aware this various but any time frame would be helpful)
5. I still have my original receipt, what information do I need to provide? and where do I find that info on the tv.

Like everyone's sentiment it is a shame that this tv is prone to this issue....I can honestly say that I LOVED this tv when I purchased it but it now seems like a rock rolling downhill picking up speed quickly with the onset of the 'hulk' green. Thank you in advance for any and all help/insight you can provide. Good luck to all.

Following up on my Feb 3rd post...

I finally received my 55EX500 about 10 days ago. I'm glad I did not wait and chase after a more expensive and "better" Sony model. I am very pleased with the EX500. Right off the box, the colors are superb albeit a bit on the "hot" side. With minor adjustments, the colors are dynamic and stunning! Much better than my 50XBR1. If you have a 50XBR1, I think you will be happier with a 55." Without the "ears" on each side of the TV, the 52" will look smaller to your eyes. Even my son and wife commented that the 55EX500 looks smaller than the 50XBR1.

You do not have to send the old set back. I just called and told them the problem I was having and they gave me the option to fix, which I declined or pay $225 for the 55EX500. I'm shocked that they didn't make you an offer. Do you have extended warranty through BB?

Just call the Sony service number.(I don't have it, I'm at work.) That's what I did when I first noticed the dreaded "green blob". Explain your problem and most likely they will transfer you to the special dept. and they will most likely make you an offer to buy a new tv.
