Problems have been noted by a number of consumers refered to as Yellow Blobs or stains in the image. There is a pending class action lawsuit against Sony regarding this issue.
After searching for answers about my KDS50a2020, I found this site. I bought my LCD back in 2007. I registered it but did not purchase an extended warranty. My picture started getting green weeks ago and I started looking for answers to why. I found out the optical block was bad and called Sony about it. I am getting a KDL55ex710 for $225.00. There were other offers too, but with a bigger set, there was also higher extra price. All were good deals, but I went the least expensive. The set is on its way now. I have confirmation. I should have it in less then a week. I will write back to let everyone know how it went. So far, Sony is impressing me. BTW, 90% + of my electronics are Sony made.
I just called and tried to get the 60NX810 for $900 because they offered it to me for $1100. Customer relations told me that it depended on what TV you had that went bad and my price would still be $1100.
Steve, my account was billed 48 hours after delivery.
After reviewing the prices quoted by others here, I am going to contact Sony and ask why I was charged $300 more than others. I didn’t see this site until after I had contacted Sony, so I may have no recourse. A friend suggested the reps might be getting a commission on the sale price. I will post as to the response I get from Sony.
I DO suggest any who contact Sony, ARGUE THE PRICE!
Funds have cleared, my new KDL55HX800 should be on it’s way soon. Hopefully delivery is quick.
KDL55EX710 $50.00 + local sales tax
KDL55HX800 $375.00 + local sales tax
KDL46NX810 $210.00 + local sales tax
KDL60NX810 $900.00 + local sales tax
These are the choices I was offered, I will let everyone know the availability and turn around time once I have more information.
This is a followup….
When I contacted Sony, they offered 4 tvs at a discounted price. I asked for a 60″ to replace my 60″ and was told NO, NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE REPLACEMENT PROGRAM! 3 calls later, nothing changed, and I bought the KDF55NX800. Now, just a week later, my close friends who have the same 60A2000, and the same optical block failure issue, were offered a KDF60NX810!!!!
WTF!!!!!! THAT’S the tv I wanted!!!!!!Why are different people offered different options??
Was just informed that the tv they offered is out of stock. I was given the option of couple lesser tv or to wait. I am going to wait it out.
How long does it take after they receive your documents before the withdraw funds and send tv?
Todd, Eddie P or Mike, Have you recieved your replacement TV or notification that it is on the way? Has money been deducted from your account yet?
Thanks
My 60A2000 turned green about 6 months ago. I thought it was dust and tried to clean tv. NOT! So Sony offered the following….
46NX800 $410.00
55NX810 $660.00
55HX800 $575.00
55EX710 $225.00
I took the HX800 since it was such a good price compared to $1798 at Costco.
Some of us have the same pricing, others are quoting some ridiculously low offers. Any idea why?
I have the KDS-R50XBR1 and they offered me this
KDL55EX710 $50 + tax
KDL55HX800 $375 + tax
KDL55NX810 $460 + tax
KDL46NX810 $210 + tax
It sucks that the TV went bad but at least they stand behind their product . Those are expensive TV’s at dirt cheap prices. Good job sony.
Just called yesterday. This is what they offered for a 60″ – KDS-60A2000
KDL55EX710 $225.00 + local sales tax
KDL55HX800 $1175.00 + local sales tax
KDL55NX810 $660.00 + local sales tax
KDL46NX810 $410.00 + local sales tax
Thank you HD GURU! I have a 50’ KDS A2000 that I purchased July 2006 for close to 2,500. The TV has been perfect and I have been amazed at how well the picture has held up over the years as the rest of you could probably agree. I experienced no problems until I had to replace the bulb about 6 months ago. I didn’t even notice it, but after replacing the bulb, my wife and friends said they noticed a yellow/green hue in the picture and I had to agree. Therefore, 6 months goes by and I decided to Google SXRD green hue and came across this website. I got all my ducks in a row and was prepared to call like the rest of you and see what kind of deal they would offer me. Sony offered a deal similar to Stephanie’s deal but not as fair. After the woman asked me for all my personal information, I was given three options, or else I would have probably hung up and tried for a better offer.
Repair the TV, or take one of the two TV deals.
46″ (model KDL46 NX810) for 440+ state taxes
55″ (model KDL55 NX810) for 660+ state taxes
I argued that I found a website and that Stephanie was offered the same TV’s but for a fraction of the price, I was offered. The woman didn’t budge and I questioned her about the TV’s since I haven’t been in the market for some time and wasn’t up to the current technology. Needless to say, I inked up on the 55†model after quickly researching the internet prices going for close to 2,000 at some of the online stores. I have taken pictures of my TV and will be mailing the proper info tomorrow. Seems like a pretty sweet deal even though I didn’t get the price down lower. I’m sure I will be happy playing with my new toy when it gets here.
Sony offered me a choice between:
46″ (model KDL46 NX810) for $210 and
55″ (model KDL55 NX810) for $460
I asked about the 55″ (model 55 KDL 55EX710 for $100) that Dave was offered – but Sony told me that they no longer have that one available in the warehouse.
I sent in my paperwork /picture, of green TV, on 2/11, it arrived on 2/14 (yesterday) and this morning, the money has been taken out of my account, so I guess my new TV is on the way!
Wow! I just received my new Sony TV no questions asked. They called Feb 9th (only about 10 days after my initial call). There were 3 other same model TVs on the truck not sure how many others he delivered today but had at least 3 more. I still have my old one to give away but am very happy I found this web-site.
@ Dave,
Dave thanks for that tidbit of information. I called Sony the exact same day with the same issue on our rear projection TV and they offered me the same 55EX710 TV for 325 dollars…I have a little bit of ammunition now to go back at them and ask why the difference in replacement options for people. But it is still nice to know they are trying to fix the issue.
Rob
This is amazing. I just hung up from talking to Sony 866.850.8673. After making me a bit nervous with all the questions exact purchase date which I did not have, when did the green start, did I replace the bulb etc, the service person checked the systems and came back and told me out of warranty but they are extending an offer to replace. My options were (both LED Flat Screens)
55 KDL 55EX710 for $100
46 KDL 46NX810 for $210 (Wi-Fi and 3D)
I need to give Serial Number and Model Number with Serial Number Tag pealed off the back of the TV along with a picture of the green and they are shipping me the new 46″ LED Flat Screen free shipping. I just looked online and this TV retails for $1,800+. I have hopes from all the other comments. They said it would take 3 weeks. I have gained much respect for Sony. I purchased this TV used at an estate sale but still paid over $2,000 in late 2006. New it was about $3,500.
I just called service yeterday man came up just loking to the picture said optical block is bad i will report issue andyouwillgeta new lcd
lets se what happens KDS 55A2020 SXRD.
I hada sony 27″ worked 25 yrs still working??
I stilhave ESP for 55
I willpost the outcome
I want to thank this website. When the problem first happened I wasn’t even going to call for repaid of my 60in KDS-A2000 for me it is never worth it, was about to dump it. Then saw all the comments called sony right after x-mas nice an prepared and received this week the KDL60EX500 for the $350+tax.
Now the old set is headed to a men’s shelter…
“They offered me the KDL-46EX710 for free and the KDL -60EX500 for $350 + tax. ”
That was my offer the day after Christmas to replace my 55″. However after I sent in the photo and serial tag and called back yesterday, the 60″ option is now the KLD60EX700 for $535 plus tax. I pushed them hard for a 55″ option, which is what I really want, but no dice. I went for the 60″ and will try to sell it. They said I should hear from the shipping company within 3 business days to set up delivery.
Thankfully Sony sent out a tech to fix my SXRD under warranty. He took the guts out of the TV and laid them on the floor, and replaced some parts.
Its been working great ever since. SXRD is great technology, too bad it was just too expensive for mass market.
Same green hue issue with my 4 year old SXRD (KDS-60XBR-1). Called into 866-850-8673 number to report issue. Rep did not offer any information willingly so you have to be well prepared that you are aware that this is an epicdemic issue with this model tv. The rep will provide you the options of a free 46″ or 60″ for $150. You will need model number and serial number and date of purchase information. After giving you the event number they will provide another 888 number that has been set up to deal with the ordering of the new tv. They will give you specific instructions on what additional information they will need and a picture of the tv with the issue to process the claim and get the new tv on order. You have 1 week to provide this info to them. Took a few minutes but in both cases reps were very professional and helpful. Coodos to SONY for taking care of its loyal customers.
I called them today, explained the problem with my KDS50A2000 and they offered me the 46″ or 60″ replacement, but not the 55″ which is the one I really wanted.
Has anyone ever managed to get anywhere with this with Sony UK? I’ve got a gone-green UK-market KDS-55A2000 which is about 3 years old and depending who you speak to in Sony UK you either get :
a) The class action doesn’t apply outside the USA so tough luck or
b) The optical blocks used in European models are completely different from the USA ones (which must be garbage surely as it’s only the tuner that’s going to be different but they stick to it)
One thing that has puzzled me…. I swapped the bulb recently and the green tint went away for about 2 months then started creeping back – which seems counter-intuitive if it’s an optical block issue? My replacement bulb was Osram (as was the original one) – but the recommended one seems to be Philips so could my problem be the colour spectrum from the replacement bulb deteriorating very fast (the picture is very green indeed when initially turned on then gets less so as the bulb warms up)?
Any info gratefully received!
You know if you complain to them that you do not think their offer meets your expectations of replacing their 2006 top of the line TV they will offer you a better deal. I was offered and accepted a brand new 60″ XBR-LV900 for $1250. Now that is a deal that can’t be beat!
Well, I just called the866-850-8673 number to tell them about my 60″ XBR1 with a green blob, and sure enough they offered me the 60″ LCD (KDL60EX500) for just $150 bucks. I have to send in a photo of the blob and the serial number tag, but that’s certainly a small price to pay to get a whole new 2010 set to replace a 4 year old set. Sure, I paid over $4k for my XBR1 when it came out, but after an earlier OB replacement, I’m glad that Sony is standing by their product and making it right.
(I wouldn’t have minded if they offered the 55″ 3D set, but it wasn’t an option – still $150 bucks really can’t be beat, when there’s a guy up on CraigsList charging $300 to repair these bad OBs).
Did you guys get stuck with your old SXRD sets to dispose of, or will Sony take that away? If not, I guess I can donate it to Salvation Army or something.
just found this website and wish i had seen it earlier. our 60in. sony has been repaired 4 times in 4 years with the last repair being that of the optical block. my warranty ran out 12/14 and on 12/19 the tv has bit the dust. have been dealing with best buy and they have literally done nothing. i was informed only tonite that there was a recall in 2008 and thats the fist i’ve heard about it. purchased the tv in dec 06 and it has been a nightmare. i wish i would have contacted sony earlier because i’m sure that they would not do anything since it out of warranty now. i have been asking best buy to do something about it but have just been wasting my breath. i figured since it was under warranty i had to deal with them instead of sony. i would appreciate any feedback on how i might go about handling this. . Please tell me what i should do from here.
Well it just go’s to show you. When buying an expensive TV, buy the extended warranty. I bout the KDS 50A2000 in 12/06 and it turned green too. Sony sent me a brand new 46″ KDLEX710 LED LCD for FREE a $1200 TV 12/10/10. Im waiting to buy an optical block when the price go’s down or I find one for cheap and repair it myself. Good Luck with all your problems and Happy Holidays.
I’ve been in the process of getting mine replaced for a couple of weeks now. I have a KDS-55A2000 that was purchased in December 2006.
They offered me the KDL-46EX710 for free and the KDL -60EX500 for $350 + tax.
I sent them the pics and everything, but two weeks in and they haven’t shipped my new TV yet. They changed my event number without telling me. I’m getting a little worried here. We’ll see if I actually get a new TV or not.
Thank you all for the posts it has provided some insight to the same issues we are experiencing with our Sony TV model KDS-50A2000. Earlier this month it started showing a green tint all over the screen; it overall has been a great TV until we had to replace the bulb 3 times within the past year and the horrible green picture. We have been a long time buyer of Sony products, but have become very discouraged with reading the poor customer service they are providing to their customers. Hopefully we will be able to receive a resolution to this issue.
I have to wonder why Consumer Reports is so closed mouth about Sony’s problems? No where on the TV issue do you see anything about Optical Block Failure problems or other issuses with the DLP TV’s. Make me wonder if they are being “paid off” or “threatend” if they do a story about it. I would have been a better negotiator if I had known this was such a wide spread problem. I also will never buy another Sony TV since they expect them to only last 7 years!
Bought a KDS55A2000 in 2006.
Developed the green screen over time.
I thought I was toast until I found the various websites about the problem. Called Sony. They asked me several questions & set me up with an “event number”. They gave me 3 choices:
KDL46ex500 for free
KDL60ex500 for $350
KDL55hx800 for $625
I sent them the paperwork & picture of the screen they requested.
Hooked up my new tv last night.
The whole process took about 3 weeks.
Man I want to thank everybody for input of this green rings problem, which I didn’t know what to do. I have a KDS-R60XBR1 which we paid about $5,000 for at for the first 3 years no problem then bulb went out.
Bought new buld last year, and noticed this green rings around edges and center of screen.
Contacted Sony even though it stated no longer applies
Wow they offered me a brand new 60 inch LCD TV model KDL60EX500 for $150.00 or a 47 inch at no cost.
They are going to pay for shipping/handling I just need to send the $150 after they get paperwork ie serial number and take a picture of screen to prove this problem.
Thanks again guys for this forum, this tv goes for over $1,999 at best buy
this is a great deal
Hi Henry –
Sorry for the delay in my response. Try 866.850.8673.
They took are of me from the first phone call, did what was asked of me and now have a brand new 55″ bravia and all I had to pay was $225 shipping from Japan to the east coast, still have the green beast though.
Jon and Marlo,
What department/division did you call? If you’ve got the number, that’d be great.
Thanks
I have a sony SXRD 60″. 3 years old, $ 6500 Can. And I was changed the lamp 3 month ago. Now the TV getting full monitor is yellow and very yellow.
I can’t adjustment and I don’t know who is can help or tell me what problem. Same thing my, VAIO 17″ 1080P, after 3 years monitor downed. Fix $500.00. The TV and VAIO by the Sonny style. I don’t know what happen more for my DVD camcorder & the cyber-shot
Please! Help me the TV what I must to do?
Sincerely
I bought a KDS-50A2000 in June 2007. It was a close out at Circuit City and I think I paid $1200. Started noticing the OB problem about 2 months ago. I replaced the bulb to no avail and man, am I glad I found this website. I called Sony and they offered a KDL-46EX710 for free or a KDL-55HX800 for $625. After I researched both models it was a no brainer for me; I couldn’t resist the 3D capability of the HX800.
I have the KDS-R60XBR1 and thought I had a top of the line TV. After about 3 years, I shelled out an extra $400 for replacement lamps and another $500 for a repair that needed to be done that had to do with the power supply or something. Anyhow, soon after that I started getting the Yellow Tint problem and was just going to trash my TV when I heard about the replacement offer.
I called the number provided in early Oct. 2010, told them my problem, sent in a picture of the TV showing the problem with the original serial number sticker from the TV, etc. After about 3 weeks, I got my replacement TV which was the KDL55EX710 and I am loving it! Just when I was hating Sony, they made me happy with this replacement, though I wish it was free. This model cost me $425 plus tax. I believe they also offered a smaller 46″ model for free, but I opted for the larger 55″ model.
I hope you others will also get your replacement!
I just wanted to report in to say that Sony is offering the following exchange for the green tint issue on the KDS-60A2000 (as of 10/19):
KDL55EX710 $625.00+local sales tax
KDL46EX710 $225.00+local sales tax
I sent a picture of the issue with the serial # tag and the TV has shipped (confirmed with the shipping company).
I own an 60″ XBR1 with the same issue being spoken about. I called Sony and did all they requested of me, and now in a waiting pattern to see when my new set will be sent out.
In the mean time, anyone with a Facebook account, put a friend request in to Sarah Kepler. She has helped a great number of people in their claims.
does anybody know what are the latest offers for the xbr1 models??
Noticed a green tint only when certain backgrounds are transmitted onscreen. Had the TV since 2007 and noticed this 3 weeks ago. Ticked that I held out for years to get myself something special before we started having kids and now this is what I’m stuck with. Sony has had a ‘grip’ on me as I’ve always felt they were the best quality….. Well not anymore.
i have a KDS R60XBR1 which i have changed the lite bulb as well as a fan motor and have been dealing with a yellow stain and tint. i just stopped watching it and my kids now tell me it is unbearable. i found a guy that used to rebuild the optical block but as stopped because they do not last so now i hear about a class action suit can somebody tell me if i am SOL or what i need to do besides toss it in sony’s direction thanks
My KDS-60A2000 (purchased in 2/07) started exhibiting the tell-tale green tint a few weeks ago. Didn’t know about the OB problem so I tried to correct it to no avail. Called Sony yesterday to see if they could help. At the same time I searched online for “SXRD Green Tint” and came across a lot of hits (like this forum).
The first time I called Sony offered me three LCD models at “significant” discount. The discounts are substantial, but I’m not in a position to shell out $600 to $800 (with tax) for a new TV at this time. So I asked for the number of a couple of authorized service providers so I could get estimates on an OB repair. Was shocked to receive estimates that ranged from $1200 to $1500!!
One helpful guy at one service provider told me that Sony had extended the manufacture for this warranty to – get this – 8/31/10. It ended just two weeks ago! I’ve been trying to adjust out this ‘green tint’ at least that long.
Well, I called Sony back to get them to cover the repair. Level 1 and level 2 customer relations couldn’t/wouldn’t authorize the repair. I wouldn’t give up. I was finally transferred to “National Customer Service” who authorized a “one time” exception. They say they’ll pay for the OB fix, but I will lose the discount on a new TV. I have to take the chance that the OB repair will last a few years so I hope Crossbar is wrong. Fingers crossed.
I’m writing all this to let people (like Nick) know that if you can still get Sony to pay for the OB repair. You just have to be persistent. It doesn’t hurt to remind Sony’s reps that you’ve been a loyal customer for years and this issue could affect your continued loyalty. Good luck!
If you have a 60A2000 you are hosed. Sony will replace the optical block with a reworked used optical block with exactly the same design flaw as the one you just saw fail. It will fail. Perhaps in a new and exciting way
You can not get a replacement TV.
The class action lawsuit against Sony has led them to really clamp down on options for anyone covered. You would have more options if you had no warranty.
The normal process is that if it fails 4 times, they will offer a replacement.
4 failures; 4 visits; 4 failures. Then you may get a TV that is designed t work rather than burn itself out in a low-key miserable fashion.
Them’s the facts; got them by talking to 7 Sony reps (at last count). The last one had all the answers. I did not like them, but he knew what he was talking about. The others exhibited various degrees of stupidity.
BTW, I still am not clear if the replacement optical block has a warranty of 30 days or 90 days. I have been told both.
Nancy, you have to follow the instruction they gave you exactly.
I’m in the same boat… KDS-60A2000 Best Buy has a guy coming out tomorrow to have a look. Replaced the lamp about 6 months ago and now have yellow showing through dark images. Sounds like the OB defect as well. My warranty will be out at the end of this month. I also intrested in the reimbursment options as I really wanted the unit to last longer than 4 years. This t
My family has a KDS-60A2000 that has been green tinged for a good 6 months now. I also feel it necessary to note that replacing the lamp happened 6 months ago. As per the other people asking, I am also wondering if we are still under the same reimbursement plan as the two models listed above since all these TVs have the OB defect. I’m thinking of calling SONY tomorrow and figuring out our options. I feel completely cheated, and it sounds like SONY probably won’t care. I’ll hopefully be able to let you know how this pans out, but again if someone could answer my question I’d be very grateful.
So i have this iddue:
I own a 60″ XBR1, i am claiming for the replacement tv NX800 they offered me that set and i had accepted. 3 days later i recieved a phone call from a guy name Robert ID CU6E and is telling me that Sony wont give me a replacement tv because my serial number was used in another claim and that another person already recieved a replacement tv(!!!???).
As far as i am concerned we need to send them the original sticker to file the claim of a replacement tv, Right?…ok, so how or who can explain me why or how was my serial number used when i still have not send the original sticker to SONY, I HAVE THE ORIGINAL STICKER!!!
This guy Robert (CU6E) is a representative from NATIONAL RELATIONS AT SONY and is telling me NO TV FOR YOU!
Please help me i am out of a tv with no way of how to solve this issue, sony is giving me the finger pretty much and I know that i can claim the replacement tv because i qualified under the class action lawsuit.
HELP!
