Psst, Do You Want The Best Value In Big Screen HDTV? Get A DLP HDTV At An Incredible New Low Price

hl50a650hl56a650hl61a650-front2-crop-420.jpg

UPDATE Nov. 25, 2008-A Samsung spokesperson in an email claims the price drops listed in this article are incorrect. However, no correct “New” prices have been provided by Samsung. The “New” MAP prices have been removed pending updated MAP price information from Samsung.

The HD Guru has been checking on line prices for Samsung DLPs and has noted recent significant price reductions by etailers. For example, Vann’s is now offering the HL72A650 for $2099.98 including free shipping.

Despite all the ballyhoo about LCD and Plasma and the press’s willful neglect of the technology, DLP-based HDTVs offer bright, beautiful full 1080p HD resolution on bigger screens for thousands of dollars less than comparably sized flat screen LCD or plasma HDTV. DLP rear projectors, at about 15” depth, are not as flat as LCD or Plasmas. However, according to set makers, the vast majority of large flat panels sold are placed on table stands or in wall units, negating the depth advantage of flat screen designs.

According to industry sources, beginning this Sunday, November 23rd, 2008 Samsung will be slashing it retail (MAP) prices on its latest 2008 DLP rear projectors up to a whooping $600! If you check out reviews and do price comparisons at on-line shopping sites such as Pricegrabber (a “Check Prices” Pricegrabber link is conveniently located on the lower left hand side of this webpage) you should be able to grab one of these beauties with a discount of up to an additional 25% off.

There are two types of DLP rear projectors. One type uses a projection bulb typically lasting 3-5 thousand hours before it burns out, requiring replacement at a cost of under $200 on-line. The other type of DLP uses light emitting diodes (LEDs). The LEDs produce a very bright image, have wider color gamut than lamp driven projectors, and unlike lamps, they don’t fail during the lifetime of the HDTV! Here are the old and new MAP prices of Samsungs DLP rear projectors

Model/Size     Lamp/LED      New Price     Old Price
HL61A650/61”  Lamp                             $1599.99
HL61A750/61”  LED                               $1899.99
HL67A750/67”  LED                               $2399.99
HL72A650/72”  Lamp                             $2799.99

Sorry but too little too late, as an example I bought a Panasonic 50PZ85U (1080p) last week for $1400. 50″ is big enough for me and my girl!

This is awesome! Been waiting for 67″ LED DLP to drop to a magic number (which I made up for myself).

Time to replace that dinosaur TV.

Samsung to slash prices on DLP HDTVs

Yes, they’re about three times as thick as plasma and LCD sets, but DLP televisions offer big, beautiful pictures at very attractive prices. And those prices may soon get much more attractive. HD Guru says that Samsung is about…

Jim

$1,400 is still too much money for the picture to change when I get up or down,,,or move left to right! STILL A PROBLEM

Samsung Cutting DLP HDTV Prices By $600

While you won’t be able to mount a DLP HDTV on your wall, $600 in cost savings may be a worthy sacrifice. According to HD Guru, his sources claim that Sunday, November 23, Samsung will be slashing the retail prices…

I was just in BB and noticed that the Samsung DLP sets were a lot dimmer when viewed from an angle than the nearby LCD and Plasma sets on display. Be sure to look for yourself if this could be an issue.

Mark
Posted on 23rd November, 2008

I have yet to see any websites or retail locations displaying the lowered price yet. My self-taught economics tell me that all of the retailers/websites will wait until Black Friday/Cyber Monday to drop the prices. What better way for Abe’s of Maine to advertise an HL67A750 at ALMOST 50% 0FF!!! ($2399.99 – $600 – $531.81 (current discount) = $1268.18, or 47% off)
Not that I’m complaining, for that price I would buy two :)

Lam
Posted on 23rd November, 2008

Referring to mark’s comments, what current discount is he referring to that leaves the TV at $1268.18?

grf
Posted on 23rd November, 2008

I believe Mark was referring to Amazon, who’s had that model as low as $1849 shipped. FWIW, I Still haven’t seen anyone reflect the noted changes.

Lam
Posted on 23rd November, 2008

Same here. I check Abe’s before sunday and it was at 18 something still…

bob
Posted on 24th November, 2008

the changes will probably start showing up tomorrow. show note though, most sites have been increasing their prices recently, but that just may be for show (bigger price drop = bigger savings!)

Posted on 25th November, 2008

Any further word from industry sources? Street prices have held or drifted slightly upward since 11/23.

larry
Posted on 26th November, 2008

I have found it at $1800 shipped, that’s $600 off retail. I am ready to buy, but should I wait a few more days?

bob
Posted on 26th November, 2008

to HDguru, how about the LED versions? you seeing any price drops in those models… cuz those are the ones we care about.

bob
Posted on 26th November, 2008

this is weird. amazon’s prices are holding steady. crutchfields have inflated nearly 50% in less than 3 days.

Black Friday Deals

The Friday after Thanksgiving is known for heavy spending in retail stores, but it is clear that consumers are increasingly turning to the Internet to make their holiday purchases, said comScore…

Posted on 30th November, 2008

I would not invest in a lamp based DLP under any circumstances. The bulb cost and the bad ballasts make these sets too expensive to own, no matter what the sale price. I assume the LED versions will be more reliable and will consume much less energy.

Posted on 2nd December, 2008

Costco has the 73″ Mitsubishi low end DLP for 1,995.00 with free stand. If Pioneer and Sony don’t make DLP does that mean they aren’t that great? The LED ones sound better at least but I remember some reviews about noise they make so let us know if you have one!

Lynn
Posted on 5th December, 2008

We looked into DLP TVs online and were thrilled with the prices of the 60″+ models, but when we actually went into a store and saw the picture next to LCD/Plasma pictures, we were really disappointed. We’re waiting for prices of the LCDs to go town to a more reasonable range and aren’t even considering a DLP.

grf
Posted on 6th December, 2008

@Lynn:
It’s really tough & frequently misleading to try & judge picture quality based on the setup at most stores, especially big box stores. Calibrated properly, I find that DLP competes very well with plasma & LCD in every practical way other than vertical viewing angle.

@Everyone else:
The HL67A750 is down to $1818.96 shipped at Amazon tonight.

Hammer
Posted on 12th December, 2008

It was 1818.96 but now they have jacked it back up to 1897.95 at Amazon with the in home delivery. However Van’s has it for only 1798.98 with curbside delivery. I’m paying my property tax bill and will wait until next year!

Just checked and the Samsung 67″ 750 is 1999.99USD at Amazon. Looks like I’ll have to sell more blood before I can afford a DLP as Samsung’s pricing is taking a different MAP.

I’ve owned a Samsung DLP 56 inch 1080p screen for nearly a year and a half…the viewing angle issue is not a problem with current models as viewing angles are now as high as 160 degrees! I finally had both my living room and bedroom screens ISF calibrated and am thrilled with the picture quality of both screens!

I just came from BB, having purchased the HL61A750 for $1550.00 delivered and set up. The price on the sticker was $1,897.95. I offered $1550.00 for the set delivered and set up. Wonder what would have happened had I offered $1250,00 or something? Anyway I am satisfide. My impression was great- plus +++. I currently have a 6 year old 52 ” RCA which has performed flawlessly to get rid of. I expect the price in Sundays ad to be lower but they are selling out of the 61 and up and will not be ordering more(so they say). New models???

Dealzmodo: Samsung 67″ DLP (LED) HDTV for $1800 This Sunday [Dealzmodo] by Techno News Feed
Posted on 5th January, 2009

[...] The folks at HD Guru are reporting that Samsung will be deeply slashing prices on their 2008 line big-screen DLP HDTVs starting this Sunday. We’re talking discounts of up to $600 (maybe even more if purchased with an online discount). That puts the 67″ (HL67A750) 1080p LED-lit DLP at $1800 after the $600 price cut. Obviously, there are compromises with rear projection, but personally I would rather have both good picture quality and the wads of cash I would blow on a thinner LCD. A list of old and new MAP prices on Samsung DLPs: [...]

Bought HL61A750 (61″ with LED engine) today at Crutchfield.com at an incredible price of $1299 (Free Shipping, no TAX in NY). What a bargain! I don’t mind to have it in back order. Can wait even a month if needed for this price.

Rob
Posted on 12th January, 2009

I bought the same set (HL61A750) on 1/11 at Crutchfield for $1,169.99 with a 10% off coupon code (before Crutchfield stopped accepting it). Simply an unbelievable price on a great TV!

Hammer
Posted on 12th January, 2009

That is a great deal on the 61, hope the 67 comes down as well maybe to 1599.00 or less!

Alex
Posted on 13th January, 2009

What settings do you use to set the TV? I found so far one posted on Cnet and used by their reviewer:
http://reviews.cnet.com/9602-12576_7-0.html?messageID=2510930
I was wondering if there are other places that recommend good settings for the dark room environment

Hammer
Posted on 17th January, 2009

Crutchfield is good but usually not the cheapest and sure enough now that 61 LED DLP is listed for only 999.99 in some major electronics stores so 1299.00 is not looking so good plus there are reports that it has a defect so beware!

dclive
Posted on 17th January, 2009

I just got back from purchasing a HL61A750 from Best Buy. I matched Conn’s $999 price then took advantage of their 10% pricematch policy – net price was $940 plus tax.

Prices have REALLY come down.

Hammer
Posted on 17th January, 2009

That is pretty slick! Circuit City may not even beat that. Hopefully I’ll have the money in March to find out!

Alex
Posted on 19th January, 2009

You need to remember that Samsung has 61″ with LED and Lamp technology. First one is the 7th generation, the second is the 6th. You need to make sure that $999 is for the right one. Also, BestBuy only matches the price of stores in your area. They won’t match anything from on-line or if it is in store that 3 hours away…

Hammer
Posted on 24th January, 2009

Conn’s are all over here in D/FW, Texas and the LED 61″ is at 999.00 for the 2nd straight week so maybe you should cancel your Crutchfield backorder. You will have to pay tax and carry it home of course but that is 230.00 cheaper, maybe more if you get that Best Buy match plus deal!

Alex
Posted on 27th January, 2009

My TV from crutchfield will be delivered today. Glad I got it as they discontinued it, and so far it was the lowest price for me (I live in Upstate NY). So no one in my area is cheaper than that. Even though it was back ordered, they filled the order in less than a week which was amazing.

For all of you who did not get one yet, be careful how long you wait. I read the editor’s review on Cnet, where he said that they may discontinue DLP this year all together…as a result, no new series will be available, and nothing to drive the price down further. So when few TVs will be left, the prices may start climb back up!

Hammer
Posted on 1st February, 2009

Not bad at all and I guess you got a $200.00 NFL gift certificate also. The guy I talked to at Best Buy seemed to indicate that they would not go below Conn’s 999.99 price but might match it so the guy that got it for 940.00 seems to have gotten very lucky! Now Conn’s has Toshiba’s top of the line 42xv545u for only 799.99 plus tax. Crutchfield has it at 999.99. I may get one of these this week so which do you all think is the better long term deal? The 61 DLP would be for living room while the 42 LCD would be for bedroom. How much better picture is the Toshiba which has 120Hz vs the LED DLP which Alex says may be discontinued?

Alex
Posted on 2nd February, 2009

I put my 61″ in the basement and I have a very big room there. I was watching DVD (not HD) series of “Planet Earth”. I can tell you that you get the best picture if you sit far enough from the TV (more than 9 feet). I actually had it about 12 feet away from the couch. So for the bedroom I think 42 LCD makes more sense than 61″. Go to the store and look at the picture from the distance you are planning to watch and see how it looks. That is all that matters in my opinion.

Hammer
Posted on 4th February, 2009

OK, I got the 61 LED DLP today and had to go to Carrolton to pick up, only 30 miles away to avoid 80.00 delivery fee. Circuit City was still over 1500.00, Best Buy was out of it as is Crutchfield but Conn’s still had it new in box for 1079.99 with tax. Much better than the 3800.00 I paid for Mitsubishi Diamond 65″ 8 years ago plus 700.00 for HD tuner that was nothing more than a Directv HD receiver, 500.00 for 5 year warranty and 200.00 for shipping. I actually thought I got a good deal back then as it was 5000.00 in stores but today I am sure I got a good deal! Thanks to HD GURU and all whose comments gave me the knowledge to go for this one!

Hammer
Posted on 25th February, 2009

Conn’s here in TX now has the 67″ LED DLP for 1699.99 which is the lowest in store price I have seen and similar to Amazon and others price once tax is included. Still I got the 61 for 758.00 cheaper with tax. I also went ahead and got the Toshiba 42xv545u when it was on sale for 799.99 so I basically got both these for what this 67 would cost! Since Samsung is ceasing production of this kind of TV it makes me wonder how good it really is but for now it looks like the best deal I have ever made on a TV! If the 67 comes down a bit more and I have the money I may still get it if I can justify it so keep us informed!

Posted on 30th March, 2009

Got the 67 Samsung LED DLP for 1299.99 on March 28th. They were on sale for 1499.99 but it was the last one so they gave me 200.00 off the display model. 299.00 for a 3 year in-home service warranty sounded like a good deal and they financed the whole shebang so now I owe 1728 with tax. Says it’s 3-D ready so hope to find out more. For now I have Directv HD DVR, Sony Blu-Ray and Samsung DVD recorder with VHS player and Pioneer Laserdisc player going into it so I think I’ve made some real progress since the Super Bowl when I had no 1080P or any kind of HD and no Blu-Ray!
