SONY tricky with release of new V4100 Series. They make no mention at all that the replacement to the V3000 Series has been reduced to the mediocre, mundane, run-of-the-mill 8-bit processing, capable of only 16 million colors. Last years V3000 Series had that great 10-bit processing that enables the LCD to display 1.024 BILLION colors. No wonder the price has been reduced so much on the new V Series.

Outstanding article. I recently started shopping for a 32" to 40" LCD tv and my head is spinning with the number of choices and cryptic model numbers.

Thank you for saving me a boat load of time!

@Jerry:
Toshiba themselves announced well over a month ago they they are out of the HD DVD business. The entire HD DVD consortium has fallen apart. Other than some small indie houses, overseas imports, or big studios that had HD DVD stuff already in the production pipeline, HD DVD is essentially as dead as Betamax or Laserdisc. You might avail yourself of reading some other sites such as highdefdigest dot com or formatwarcentral dot com.

Of note, seems a LOT of retailers are offering varying levels of trade-in credit for those who bought into HD DVD, but so far only for players (that I've seen). Doesn't seem anyone wants to give out credits for media, though it VERY NICE if the big studios at least offered some sort of trade-in credit so if you have the HD DVD of a title, once it's released on Blu-ray you could get a few bucks back by sending in your HD disc. That would go a long way towards calming a lot of HD DVD supporters anger.

Sony lists the specifications for their 32 and 37 inch XBR 6's on their Website. They appear to lack 120 Hz. Can you confirm?

Gary:

Bought a Toshiba HD-A35 several monhs age before Sony paid off certain studios to produce only Blu-Ray HD dvds. Are there any studios out there committed to continuing to produce HD DVD format disks of have thay all succumebed? In your estimation could Toshiba produce a firmware package that when installed would allow their HD DVD players to process HD Blu Ray disks as well as the HD DVD disks? I think the HD-A35 it a terrific piece of equipment. Performance is fantastic (even with upconvert) and I have never experienced ny problems.

Thanks

On Pioneer, I've read that they will get their panels from Panasonic. I don't believe I'll wait until '09 to buy, though; I plan to check the specs on the new Pioneers (due out in a month or so) and compare them to the current models, eventually buying one or the other. My research convinced me to go with Pioneer—to my eyes, Pioneer plasmas have the best picture out there. Some user reviews on various websites suggested that the new Panasonics currently available have good blacks, but not quite Kuro-level.

This assumes I see nothing else in the next few months to change my mind, of course.
