LG’s 2011 LCD/LED HDTV Prices and Changes Revealed

March 3rd, 2011 · 4 Comments · 3D HDTV, Connected TVs, LCD Flat Panel, LED LCD Flat Panels, News

LG invited the  press to the public debut of its new 2011 Cinema 3D TVs. To help our readers decide if they should pick a deeply discounted 2010 closeout or one of the new 2011 models, we spoke with LG management to learn which models  incorporate major changes and not just a cosmetic refresh. You can save big bucks without sacrificing image quality by following our list, because 2010 model prices have been radically reduced to clear out the remaining inventories. The 2011s are beginning to arrive at dealers’ warehouses. We include pricing on the 2010 and 2011 models with Amazon links (when available) to both years’ series. All models sold by Amazon direct have free shipping.

Major New Features for 2011

Smart TV-LGs connected TV feature that permits new services and new apps as well as Internet browsing. “Net TV” feature is a carry over from last year’s models, LG’s Net TV is a fixed set of streaming services without TV apps or Internet browser.

Magic Motion Remote- combines a new graphic user interface with a motion control remote (like the Wii remote) to move the on screen cursor for more control of a sets features and Internet services.

Cinema 3D- permits the use of cheap (as low as $10 pair) passive 3D glasses in place of  shutter type active 3D glasses. LG claims more comfort, less or no eye fatigue, and no flicker with their passive Film Patterned Retarder 3D solution.

We plan examine each claim once we get our hands on a review sample. One known downside, the passive film combined with passive 3D glasses reduces vertical resolution from 1080 lines per eye to 540 lines per eye as compared with active shutter systems which provides all 1080 lines of vertical resolution per eye.

LCD
All LG LCDs use CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps) and come in sizes from 22-inches to 55-inches depending on sizes.

Thanks for your prompt response to my question about the release of the LW7700.I was undecided about buying 2010 model 55LE8500 or waiting.I am no longer undecided.I went for an end of model year deal and bought the LE8500.Thank you again.

I had read on CNet that there was going to be a high end model just below the LW9500.It was a LW7700 in 46″ and 55″ but you didn’t mention it here. Has LG decided not to release it?

LG has delayed all its full LED backlit LW series “Nano” tech sets until Q3 to give them time to change them from active 3D to FPR passive 3D designs according to a recent email we received from LG. We don’t know if the model numbers will be revamped once they are released. No mention was made about the 7700 series when I met with LG mgmt. a few weeks ago. This not than unusual.

Set makers often show TVs at the CES to gauge dealer reactions and them drop a series that they didn’t meet their sales expectations. We do not expect any more information on the LW series until just prior to its summer launch.
