The HD Guru searched the New York metro area Wednesday 11/22/07 newspapers and websites for the best “Black Friday” deals, (defined as top tier brand HDTVs, with the biggest discounts, and one price leader Olevia).

Hey Guru:
I have a question for you. I’m thinking about getting a new plasma. I’m torn between the Pioneer 6010 and Pro 150 FD (the Elite version of the 6010). I’m also looking at Panasonic’s new 65″er. Any thoughts on quality, etc. Have you tested any of these? Are the Pioneers worth investing in a ISF calibration or are they so well calibrated out of the box that Joe Kane’s DVD tweak might do everything I need? Please help me, oh Guru!

On the Sony XBR4 the refresh rate is listed as 8ms which seems slow compared to other high-end tv’s, yet it produces a 120Hz picture.Would you please explain the difference between refresh rates and Hz.If other companies new sets have a 3-4ms refresh,why would Sony’s be so slow? Would I see a difference? Thanks

Sony Style stores have the 40″XBR2 and 46″XBR2 for $1499.99 and $1999.99 respectively. Awesome deal. I picked up the 46″ today.

I picked up the Sony KDL-52W3000 at Fry’s for $2099.99 + $99 shipping (east coast). This is the lowest price I’ve found on the TV in the last few months by ~$150.
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU I HAVE A SONY BRAVIA 46 INCH HI-DEF TV. I THINK I’VE MESSED UP THE COLOR SETTINGS, IT’S NOT SHARP has it should be please help me thanks

Thanks to your advices I now have a great HD TV, the Panasonic TH-50PZ750U Plasma. It’s now in sound that I feel the need to improve my settings. So far I’ve been using the TV speakers, I think it’s time to upgrade to a better audio system. I was wondering if you have any recommendations in that area, or if you know of a site like HDGuru.com which deals with audio? 5.1 systems are getting down in price but so are the 7.1. Is there something great out there and reasonably priced that would enhanced my audio visual experience?

I snagged an Olevia 242V (42″ lcd 768p) on Black Friday at BJ’s for $699. Very pleased with the price performance as well as HDMI and component hookups to my HT setup. Have no HDMI (basic cable no box)but the QAM tuner picks up a number of HD broadcasts. I think Olevia (Syntax Brillian)is one of the best in price/performance.

I snagged the Sharp LC46D64U at Circuit City for $1299 two days after t-day. They had to backorder it, but who cares at that price. I read that Sears has a price match policy for competitor’s price minus 10% so I took my CC receipt and checked it out. Sears lowest price on this unit has been $2,199. They were in shock when I showed them the receipt. The manager left for 10 minutes and came back with a list of excuses why he wouldn’t honor the Sears price match policy. He said that they don’t honor “door buster” prices the day after t-day. The CC $1,299 was not a door buster (usually 6am – 8am the day after), and it was 2 days later. Sears doesn’t honor sales on “limit quantities”. Since I back ordered this item, I guess that quantities weren’t an issue so that fact blows that excuse out of the water. Then they said that they actually beat the CC price on this unit, but the manager showed me an ad for Sharp LC46D62U (last year’s model). What a bone head. Bottom line on Sears is this: They are so out of touch with reality on premium electronics that they didn’t want to honor their price match policy.
