Kevin,

The Samsung 1400 does not have the SO Reon processor so it is a step backwards in video quality, especially for SD DVDs. I purchased a slightly used BD-1200 on eBay for $256. New and refurbished units are still available on eBay.

I also bought the HD-XA2 for its equally stunning video processing capabilities for SD DVDs and HD DVDs. It does support HD DTS and Dolby HD but unfortunately, my Denon 3805 does not.

Does anyone have any information on the BD-P2400? Specifically the video processor used?

Happy Holidays to everyone!!!!!

What's the point of having HDMI 1.3a if it "...supports Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS but does not support DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD." ?
I thought having HDMI 1.3a would mean that it would pass both DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD codec on to a receiver that would decode it.

No argument from me. Just because a device is 1.3 does not mean it contains the entire feature set of audio and video 1.3 functions. yuio need to do your homework and check a units functionality list before purchasing. I plan to cover this in a HDMI Demystified article soon.

I just bought the latest model Samsung 40" HDTV @ 1080P.
I connected with Directv. I have the HD Recorder and it is connected to my TV with a HDMI cable. It will not work with the HDMI cable. It will only work with the component cables. I called tec. service and was told that Samsung and Magnavox will not work with HDMI. They said it was a software problem and they were working on this problem. Could this be possible?

When it comes to HDMI anything is possible. May I suggest you contact Samsung customer service to verify.

I just purchased a Samsung HD-870C DVD player. It's not a true HD DVD player (it upconverts standard DVDs up to 1080i) but Samsung includes a HDMI cable with it. I don't see how it is possible for Samsung to include the cable in a $70 DVD player and leave it out the $799 BD-P1200!

Very good review and insight. I'm waiting to see how Sony's upcomming 2nd generation player will do. $500.00,likely discounted to $400.00.

Heh, actually, yeah. The number of pixels does indeed drop by half, so 50% is correct. The drop would be a lot bigger if the player outputs 960x540.

"Sony player drops 1080i to 540p using its 1080p output mode. This means 50% of the resolution within the disc is lost."

Surely not? I was under the impression the output drops to 1920x540 which is only a 25% drop in resolution.
