Do you have any thoughts on Samsung LN-S4096D VS Sony KDL40V2500? Which one would you choose? Or neither?

Both companies use Samsung panels. I prefer the greater feature set on the Samsung, though I recommend the superior image quality of the top plasma panels (as seen in my archive)

If a tv has an HD tuner can it receive hd cable signal without the cable box from the tv station?

If the HD tuner within the HDTV also includes QAM tuning (many do) you will be able to view the HD broadcasts signals you cable provider sends (they are unencrypted) however, you will have to scan and note the channel numbers because they usually don't match the listings (i.e. Channel 4 HD may appear as 89.1).

To see all HD Cable channels with proper channel mapping you will need a "digital cable ready" (DCR) HDTV with a cablecard slot and of course obtain a cablecard from your cable provider.

Er, sorry. CC price on the HL-S5687W is $1.99K, not $19.9. That'd be an expensive set, for sure.

@born in the 40's:

I think that may not be the case so much, anymore...at least not with DLPs. I don't know from LCDs, since that's not where I've been looking. :)

The Samsung HL-S5679W was originally listed last year at something over $4K, which would be too much. But a quick search today shows it between $2.3 and $2.4K. The HL-S5687W, which I believe is the similar non-LED model, is running $19.9K at Circuit City as of this morning. That's not too shabby a gap, really.

The only other LED RPTV maker I'm aware of (though this may represent a serious gap in my research) is NuVision. Their stuff IS overpriced, IMO.

Pricing speculation I've seen on the newest LED sets from Samsung suggests they're going to run in the same range as the currently-available unit. I'm thinking that's not too bad for 1080p and 50-60 inches. Though I could be wrong. :)

Most LED TV are selling for a much higher price than other comparable quality TV of the same size. That alone took away the benefits of long life.

Thank you for responding promptly. I was asking cause Vizio has a 60" plasma for $2,999 which seems pretty cheap to me. I havent heard any negativity about Vizio so i was wondering if they maybe cutting corners somewhere.

Hdguru,
Do you have any knowledge on the new company Vizio? If so, i would appreciate your opinion. Thanks, Mack

I have only tested on Vizio for deinterlacing (check archive). With plasma prices so low today I recommend sticking to the top Japanese plasma makers (Pioneer, Panasonic or Hitachi) for known image quality and reliablity. If you shop carefully you will see the starting prices of these tier one brands are now within a few percent of the tier three ones (like Vizio, Maxent etc.)
